About the Opportunity

The College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH) combines Northeastern University's signature approach to experiential learning with liberal arts education, interdisciplinary research, and community engagement, both locally and globally.

The College comprises 17 academic units, including two schools, seven departments, and eight interdisciplinary programs, as well as 15 research centers and institutes. Responsibilities:

The Assistant Dean, Undergraduate Affairs is responsible for the management, oversight, and development of the two student-facing undergraduate teams in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH) Office of Student Academic Affairs: Advising and Co-operative Education. The Assistant Dean reports to the Associate Dean for Teaching, Learning, and Experiential Education (ADTLE) and also supports the Associate Dean in oversight of curriculum and student experience throughout the Northeastern network.

The Directors of Advising and Cooperative Education report to the Assistant Dean. The Assistant Dean will meet regularly with the Directors to ensure that budgeting, performance review, assignment of job responsibilities, and other team operations and functions are carried out fairly, effectively, and in conformity with College and University expectations. The Assistant Dean will oversee the development and management of an annual budget for Student and Academic Affairs. The Assistant Dean will also work with the Directors to develop annual plans and goals for their areas and will provide leadership in aligning those goals with the priorities of the College and University. Mentorship of team members and maintenance of an inclusive workplace that fosters and respects diversity are important aspects of the role.

The Assistant Dean will work with the Associate Dean on initiatives related to the undergraduate student experience throughout Northeastern's campus network and partnerships. This includes facilitating students' transition between the Boston campus and other sites, in collaboration with the Advising team; serving as an administrative liaison to Northeastern's Global Experience Office (GEO) for programs such as Study Abroad and Dialogues of Civilization; and administratively supporting development and provision of undergraduate curriculum on other Northeastern campuses.

The Assistant Dean will be familiar with the general goals and structure of the CSSH curriculum and with curriculum management software and will provide operational support for curriculum development and administration. The Assistant Dean will attend meetings of the college's Undergraduate Academic Affairs Committee (UAAC) as a non-voting member; facilitate consideration of student concerns, appeals, and petitions. In this role, the Assistant Dean will work with the Associate Director of Undergraduate Advising.

The Assistant Dean will support the Associate Dean in collecting and maintaining data relevant to the undergraduate experience, including on student awards and student research; recruitment, yield, and retention; and movement throughout the network. As necessary, the Assistant Dean will serve as a liaison to Enrollment Management, the Office of Alumni Relations, Student Financial Services, the Office of Student Life, and other units of the university that support the undergraduate experience.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have enthusiasm for the mission of higher education and the ability to lead a forward-looking, diverse, and inclusive workplace. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; familiarity with common office processes and applications; strong organizational skills; and ability to work both independently and collaboratively on multi-step tasks are essential. Knowledge and skills required for this position are usually acquired through a related Master's degree and at least 7 years of experience in academic advising, curriculum support, or similar roles, including evidence of increasing managerial responsibility and a record of successful implementation of goals at the strategic as well as operational levels.
