About the Opportunity:
The Business Manager will direct and coordinate the business operations for the Department of Chemical Engineering in relation to faculty, staff, advisory board, alumni, students, and donors. The Business Manager will represent the Department Chair at all times and will be the first line triage to key constituents. This position will ensure effectiveness of the daily operations of the department, particularly in the area of business administration support to the Chair and the department.

This includes assisting in mobilizing, tracking and completing key projects, report obligations and tasks. Responsibilities include the communications, daily correspondence and special messaging on the behalf of the Chair. The Manager will develop, coordinate and implement effective administrative policies and procedures for the department staff and associated programs. The Manager is the first point of contact for all departmental queries including personnel issues, university policies, space and other related queries. The Manager will execute a variety of complex financial responsibilities including the tracking of budget activity, developing expenditure forecasts, assist in projections of financial status and advise the Chair of possible over-expenditures to ensure sound, accurate fiscal practices and policies; oversee financial aspects of teaching and research assistantships and fellowship appointments at the graduate and undergraduate level.

The Business Manager will supervise staff members by overseeing workload distribution and assignments, mentor, and provide opportunities for training and professional development along with management of the performance review process. Responsibilities also include facilitating all activities of departmental tenure and promotion activities; oversee all faculty search logistics and scheduling, as well as advertising; assist with establishing, documenting, and explaining to faculty and students all departmental, college, and university policies and procedures; oversee schedules for all visitors and seminar speakers; assist with all development efforts in conjunction with the college development office; oversee departmental retreats and assist with the execution of other strategic initiatives of the department. This position will ensure the smooth operations of the department and will relieve the Department Chair of many of the administrative tasks that must be completed in order to run a Department. This frees the Department Chair to give more attention to long range planning, faculty teaching loads, class size and fundraising.

Qualifications:
  • Solid knowledge of University policies and procedures
  • Bachelor's degree and 5 years of administrative experience; experience in an academic setting is preferred
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills and ability to multi-task is essential
  • Ability to work with sensitive and confidential information
    Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential
  • Strong knowledge of budget management and administration
  • Takes initiative to solve problems, entrepreneurial, and results-oriented
  • Must have excellent computer skills including, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
